To install a silt fence correctly, workers must dig a trench that is at least six inches deep and six inches wide along the proposed perimeter line. The fabric is then placed into the trench, and the excavated soil is compacted back over the bottom flap of the material. This critical step prevents water from undermining the barrier and washing out underneath it. The supporting posts are driven deep into the ground on the downslope side of the fabric to provide maximum structural support.
