To install a silt fence correctly, you must first dig a trench that is at least six inches deep and six inches wide along the designated contour line. The filter fabric is then placed into the trench, extending along the bottom and up the side facing the slope. Post stakes are driven firmly into the ground on the down-slope side of the fabric to provide structural support against the weight of collected water. Finally, the trench is backfilled with soil and compacted thoroughly to anchor the bottom of the silt fence fabric securely against the ground.
