Step-by-Step Process to Apply for NDIS
The process of applying to NDIS can appear complicated, but it can be divided into steps and made much simpler.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Begin by ensuring that you qualify in the basic criteria. You can do this by:
- Calling the NDIS hotline
- An interview with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC)
- On the official NDIS site, with the help of the eligibility checklist
This is the first one so that you are on the right track even before you start collecting documents.
Step 2: Gather Supporting Documents
In your application, documentation is an important feature. You will require evidence that will clearly define your disability and how it affects your everyday life.
Key documents include:
- Doctors or specialists medical reports.
- Functional assessments
- Occupational therapy report (e.g. physiotherapy)
- Individual statements (not obligatory, but desirable)
The better and more elaborate your evidence, the easier your application procedure.
Step 3: Submit an Access Request
In order to be officially applied, you must file an Access Request. This would be done in many ways:
- Placing a verbal request to the NDIS
- Filling and handing in an Access Request Form
- Seeking the assistance of a medical professional or other support organisation
Part of the form can also be filled in by your healthcare provider in order to give medical evidence.
Step 4: Wait for Assessment
After you have made your application, the NDIS will consider your details. This step may take several weeks, based on the nature of your case.
During this time:
- The NDIS can call and ask more questions
- They can demand additional medical testimony
- An assessment may be offered to you
The most important thing here is patience, although remaining receptive may hasten the process.
Step 5: Receive Your Outcome
Upon consideration of your application, the NDIS will advise you of the acceptance or otherwise of your application.
If Approved:
You will proceed to the planning phase where a plan of support is prepared to suit you.
If Not Approved:
Don’t lose hope. You have the right to:
- Request a review
- Submit additional evidence
- Turn to the assistance of professionals
A large number of them succeed after giving more comprehensive records.
Step 6: Create Your NDIS Plan
In case it is approved, the second step is planning. This is where your objectives, requirements and support are defined.
In your planning meeting you will discuss:
- Your daily challenges
- Your long-term and short term objectives
- The type of support you need
This is a plan that identifies the way your funding will be distributed, therefore it is very crucial to be transparent and comprehensive.
