The proper installation of a silt fence is critical to its performance, as an improperly installed barrier will inevitably fail during a heavy storm. First, a trench measuring at least six inches deep and six inches wide must be excavated along the contour of the slope where the barrier will be placed. The geotextile fabric is then placed into the trench, ensuring that a portion of the fabric lies flat along the bottom of the excavation. Posts are driven securely into the ground on the downslope side of the fabric to provide structural support against the weight of accumulated water and mud. Finally, the trench is backfilled with soil and compacted thoroughly to anchor the bottom fabric securely, which prevents water from undermining the structure and flowing underneath it.
