Regular maintenance is absolutely essential to ensure that a silt fence continues to function effectively throughout the duration of a construction project. The barrier must be inspected after every significant rainfall event and at least once a week during dry periods to check for structural integrity. Over time, accumulated sediment will build up behind the fabric, and this mud must be removed once it reaches about one-third to one-half of the height of the barrier. Inspections should also look for signs of tearing in the geotextile material, loose or broken posts, and areas where water may have undercut the bottom edge. Any damaged sections must be repaired or replaced immediately to prevent a total failure of the sediment control system during subsequent storms.
