The lifespan of a silt fence depends largely on the quality of the materials used and the environmental conditions of the site. Most standard geotextile fabrics are treated with stabilizers to resist degradation from ultraviolet light, allowing them to remain functional for six months to a year. However, if a silt fence is subjected to extreme weather or heavy sediment loads, it may require replacement much sooner. Contractors must regularly inspect the barrier to ensure the fabric has not become brittle or detached from the stakes, as a compromised fence cannot provide adequate environmental protection.
