Determining the correct location for a silt fence involves identifying areas where sheet flow is likely to occur at the base of disturbed slopes. It should never be placed across a permanent or temporary waterway, such as a creek or a ditch, where high-velocity water would easily destroy the barrier. Instead, it should be positioned at the perimeter of a job site or at the bottom of a graded hill where it can intercept runoff before it leaves the property. Leaving enough space behind the fence for equipment access is also a smart logistical move for future maintenance.
