Effective ground protection starts with digging a trench approximately six inches deep and six inches wide along the contour of the slope. The bottom flap of the fabric is placed into the trench and backfilled with compacted soil or gravel. Anchoring the lower edge prevents stormwater from running underneath the barrier, which would otherwise undermine the entire system. Support posts made from hardwood or steel are driven firmly into the ground on the downhill side of the fabric. Properly installed silt fence structures maintain their physical integrity against strong water pressure and heavy sediment build-up.
