What are the various lung diseases?

Lung diseases are an umbrella term that represents a wide range of the disease conditions associated with the respiratory system. Majorly, the lung function is affected, which leads to breathlessness (dyspnea), difficulty absorbing oxygen, or maintaining healthy respiratory function. These conditions can develop due to infections, environmental exposures, genetics, lifestyle factors, or aging.

Lung disease can be categorized as: 

• Obstructive lung diseases, where airflow is restricted. This includes asthma, a condition that causes inflammation and narrowing of the airways.
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), characterized by breathlessness and chronic cough. It is the most severe condition that includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
• Restrictive lung diseases are lung conditions where the lungs cannot expand to their full capacity.  
• Conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis cause scarring of lung tissue, reducing the lungs’ ability to hold air and exchange oxygen effectively.
• Infectious lung diseases are also common. These include pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), and viral respiratory infections that can affect lung function and overall health.
• Some lung diseases affect the blood vessels within the lungs. For example, pulmonary hypertension increases pressure in the lung arteries, placing extra strain on the heart and lungs.
• There are also occupational and environmental lung diseases that are caused by prolonged exposure to workplace hazards like dust, toxins, chemicals, asbestos, or silica. Examples include asbestosis and silicosis.
• Lung cancer is another serious condition characterized by abnormal cellular growth in the lungs. It is often associated with smoking, though non-smokers can also develop it.
• Lung diseases vary widely in their causes and symptoms; early diagnosis and appropriate medical care play an important role in maintaining respiratory health and quality of life.
