To install a silt fence correctly, workers must first dig a trench that is at least six inches deep and six inches wide along the designated perimeter line. The bottom edge of the fabric must be buried inside this trench and backfilled with compacted soil or gravel to prevent water from undermining the structure. Stakes should be driven securely into the ground on the downslope side of the fabric, spaced no more than six to eight feet apart to provide adequate structural support against heavy water weight. If two sections of fabric need to be joined together, they should be spliced at a stake by wrapping the end posts together completely to prevent gaps. Skipping the trenching step or failing to compact the dirt over the buried fabric will inevitably cause the entire system to fail during the very first heavy rainstorm.
