I’ve worked in Software Development teams my entire career and I’ve come to realize the spectrum of skill-sets is utterly staggering. Over the years I’ve managed to adapt my in-office behaviour to handle utterly incompetent and lazy people.

The way I handle it is to simply cap my anger and frustration, but I find myself going home and venting my anger in the form of complaining to my family and friends, but this is not healthy to me nor my family/friends.

How do I handle personal stress caused by utterly incompetent and lazy co-workers?

Optional info below:

In my younger years, I naively believed incompetent/lazy people didn’t cut it in the software industry for long. I disappointingly found that preferential treatment, nepotism, and just plain self-interest on the part of managers seem to undermine this natural filtering of idiots from the software engineering industry. Thus, it seems I must learn to deal with them.

I have endless patience for people who are junior and ask numerous questions, but I don’t seem to know how to handle stress caused by the utterly incompetent and lazy people that don’t apply themselves.

Buffalo is on the Great Lakes and is a major urban area that is within two hours of Toronto. However, the Winters can be cold with over 10 feet of snow. Binghamton is a smaller area and a nice campus. But it is isolated. My gut feeling is Buffalo, it is much more Cosmopolitan.

Communication skill is the most demanded skill that a company wants. It is the topmost first priority skill which plays a vital in our day to day life. According to my research on the companies and their hiring includes communication skills as the skill required to perform better and lead the team. Moreover, a student can not get a job without communication skills. This skill is the father of all skills. Without it, other skills do have not much significance.

I would like to highlight general problems due to which you are not getting the job:

    • As you have said that ” I am trying for a job but not getting it”. Your sentence is showing that you are not confident. Try will give only Cry. First of all, change your attitude from defence to attack.
    • As you are finding an answer for it “Where is the mistake?” The mistake is you & your attitude.

Explanation: First of all, understand yourself rather than getting a job. To be clear about yourself, ask the following questions yourself:

    1. What is your dream/goal/vision/mission/ambition?
    2. What is your strategy for it (dream job)?
    3. How much time are you allocating for it?
    4. What is the schedule for it?
    5. What is everyday contribution for it?
    6. Are you enhancing the relevant skills for your dream job?
    7. Are you looking for an internship to get practical knowledge for your dream job?
    8. How do you manage your time?
    9. Are you taking guidelines for your dream jobs from someone (who is eligible to guide you)?
    10. Are you giving your BEST?

Find answers to the above questions by yourself. I hope you will get the answer to your questions (Where am I lagging?).

The bonus part of the answer

Don’t be sad. Move with a goal-oriented strategy(plan). NEVER GIVE UP!

There are 3 ways to get a job:

    1. Free
    2. Paid
    3. Recommendations

Let’s see them one by one

Free: In this, you have to study and pass the competitive exams. This requires time, patience, strategy and consistency in the study.

Paid: In this, you have to pay to get a job. It requires lots of money to buy a job in a big organisation or company. It is risky.

Recommendation: You have to approach your friends, relatives and other people to recommend you for a job in a specific company. It requires the right person for the recommendation.

Now, you may think, which is the best one? Actually, all the 3 ways are in demand and going on. It is up to you which way would you like to get a job? But my personal opinion is “Go with free” because it will teach you a lot, such as what is pain & gain to taking a job? Then, you may respect the job & responsibilities after getting it.

These are the possible ways to get a job.
