English Spoken – Sentences

Let’s see some sentences:

  • The boy is going to school.  => Sentence
  • My father is a teacher.          => Sentence
  • He reading is.                        => Sentence X
  • Boy dance room.                   => Sentence X

Def: Sentence – A group of words put together in a certain order giving complete sense.

Note:

  • 2 or more than 2 words form a sentence.
  • Imperative sentence can be formed using one word.
  • e.g Go
  • Come.
  • Laugh.

In such sentences, word you is hidden. e.g You go.   You come.   You laugh.

5 Types of Sentence:

  1. Assertive Sen
  2. Interrogative Sen
  3. Imperative Sen
  4. Optative Sen
  5. Exlamatory Sen

Assertive Sen  [Sub+V+ O.]

Def: Assertive Sen – Makes a Statement.

e.g

  • I am going to market.
  • He will come later.
  • Ram is not a bad boy.

Interrogative Sen [WhW/AV+V+S+O?]

Def: Int Sen – Asks a Question.

e.g

  • What is your name?
  • Are you a student?
  • Who will help you?

Note: Wh Words or Int Words:

  1. who
  2. whom
  3. whose
  4. which
  5. what
  6. where
  7. when
  8. how
  9. why

Imperative Sen

Def: Imp Sen – Express RAO (Request, Advice, Order).

e.g

  • Bring a glass of water.
  • Please help me.
  • Don’t go there.

Note: In imp sen, you is hidden.

Optative Sen

[Strat with May & end with !]

Def: Opt Sen – Show Curse/Blessing/Prayer/Wish.

e.g

  • May you die of cholera!
  • May god help you!
  • May he get success!

Note: Sometime, May is hidden but there is no changes in meaning of the sentences.

  • Gou die of cholera!               =May you die of cholera!
  • God help you!                       =May god help you!
  • May he get success!             =May he get success!

Exclamatory Sen (!)

Def: Exc Sen – Express some sudden/strong feelings of the mind.

e.g

  • What a beautiful scene it is!
  • What a fall!
  • What an idea!
  • Well done! Mohit.

Affirmative Sen

Def: Affir Sen – Positive Sen i.e has no Negative Word.

e.g

  • He is a boy.
  • Is he a student?
  • Please do this.
  • May god help you!
  • How nice she is!

Negative Sen

Def: Neg Sen – Have atleast one negative words.

e.g

  • He is not athief.
  • Don’t you knwo English?
  • May he not success!
  • He has no money.

Negative Words:

  1. No
  2. Not
  3. Never
  4. None
  5. Nobody
  6. nothing
  7. neither,
  8. Nor

2 Parts of a Sentence:

  1. Subject: Focus Part of the sen. e.g  Ram is a boy.
  2. Predicate: Rest of the sen. e.g Ram is a boy.

3 Types of Sen based on Time:

  1. Past Sen: Yesterday e.g. I was absent.
  2. Present Sen: Today. e.g. I am present.
  3. Future Sen: Tomorrow. e.g I shall be present.
