Ancient Classification of Nouns: 5 Types of Nouns –

  1. Proper N
  2. Common N
  3. Collective N
  4. Material N
  5. Abstract N

Proper N

Def: Proper N – Name of Anything. or a Single piece of the Earth.

  • Names of persons – Ram, Shyam, etc.
  • Name of Place – Patna, Bihar, Delhi, etc.
  • Name of Animal: Lucky, Tommy, etc.
  • Name of Book – Bible, Quran, etc.
  • Names of languages- Hindi, English, German, etc.

Common Noun

Def: Common N – Common to all.

Def: Collective Noun – Present in a group.

Modern Classification of Nouns: 3 Types of Nouns

  1. Proper Noun (Already Explained)
  2. Countable Noun: To be counted. e.g pen, boy, girl, etc.
  3. Un-countable Noun: To be not counted. e.g, rice, oil, etc.

Notes:

  1. An uncountable noun is always in the Singular Form, i.e it has no plural form.
  2. Countable Noun – It has both Singular & Plural forms.
