Why Algebra Online Exams Penalize Unclear Working Steps

Numerous students think mathematics tests are just about getting the correct answer. The answer is always important, but increasingly, exams administered online will be based on the process of how you solve the problem as well as the answer. Instructors and exam platforms wish to know how students think and solve equations, how they use formulas, and how they are able to step logically from one equation to the next. In algebra, it is especially important that you not make a small error in reasoning because a large error will result. Working steps are important in online assessments as the marking criteria may give much weight to these steps, as they show how a student understands mathematical concepts.

Clear solutions display analytical thought and demonstrate accuracy and methodical reasoning, while solutions that are not clear could make it difficult to tell if the answer was reached through analytical thought or guessing. With this in mind, students are expected to not only solve problems, but also communicate their thinking in a logical and clearly organized way when taking an online Algebra assessment.

The mix of program, product, and process is growing in significance

In many traditional assessments of mathematics, the most important part of the assignment was the answer rather than the process used to arrive at it, particularly when it was in the form of a multiple-choice question. But, in online algebra tests, the emphasis has moved to the method that was followed to get to that answer.

Students often get demoralised when they lose marks for a wrong answer to a question, even though their answer is right. This is typically due to a lack of explanation of the reasoning behind the answer. This has led to the development of the ability to communicate mathematically as well as to compute accurately being necessary as skills.

In the face of tough assignments, some students get overstimulated that they even look online for some answers to their algebra homework, searching for terms such as: Pay someone to take my online algebra exam. However, the most difficult part is not the math itself but elucidating the reasoning behind it (BAW, 2022).

Algebra Working Steps – the importance of working steps

Algebra is based on a series of logical operations. For each equation solved and each expression that is simplified, several decisions need to be made, which must be mathematically sound.

When students demonstrate each step, they provide evidence that they understand the concepts for each step. The examiner will be able to see where the reasoning is correct, where the errors lie, and if the student really understands the material.

For instance, in a linear equation, we need to perform a series of operations to isolate the variables. When several of the steps are omitted, it will be hard to distinguish whether the solution is a correct answer or a result of mathematical understanding.

Clear Steps to Conceptual Understanding

Documentation of the student’s thinking process is seen in their writing. Partial credit may be awarded if the answer is wrong, but if there is extensive documentation of steps taken, the credit may be awarded.

This is useful to students because if they were to make an arithmetic mistake on one part of a problem, they will not have an incorrect answer throughout the entire problem. Clear working enables the examiner to recognise reasoning and give credit for this, as well as for success.

Reasoning is detected by the Online Exam Systems

The online learning environment has undergone a great transformation. In many systems, the instructor can examine the answers and any step-by-step calculations, as well as digital worksheets that were uploaded, instead of just the answers.

This change is part of a general education objective: Measurement of problem-solving ability. It is often more important in mathematics to know how a student has obtained an answer than what the answer is.

Students who only think about the results may not be able to do so in situations that involve detailed reasoning. There are similar issues that occur when students are looking to get an easier grade on their assignments, like Take my calculus exam for me but with the assessments becoming more focused on the understanding of the subject matter, more than just completing them and passing with a good grade, students are becoming more desperate to get an edge on them.

Partial Marks are based on Visible Work

There are a lot of benefits to displaying the working steps, particularly because you get partial marks! A student who performs the correct steps, but makes a small arithmetic error, can score a lot of points on many algebra tests.

If the work is not done, with working, it will be impossible for the examiner to give partial credit. It is best to give an answer that is incorrect, then explain it. Otherwise, little or no credit will be given – especially if there was little understanding.

Communication is an integral part of mathematical skills

The mathematics in many students’ eyes is nothing more than numbers and formulas. But communication is a factor that has a significant impact on successful mathematics.

A good verbal explanation of a solution means that the solutioner is confident and knows the material well. Mathematical communication assists the student to organise their ideas logically, and is used to assess understanding by the teacher.

Mathematical communication is a vital part of mathematical learning as it enables students to structure and clarify their mathematical thinking and communicate their ideas (NCTM, 2018).

Conclusion

In Online Exam 1, incorrect answers will be marked down as long as the steps to arrive at those answers are not clear. Clear solutions are an indication of understanding, provide partial credit opportunities, minimise avoidable errors, and can be assessed by the examiner for problem-solving skills. Pupils who are good at mathematical communication have a much better chance of doing well in learning and at school, as education continues to focus on developing an ability for analytical thinking.
