This is an important direction for autism research, particularly because it moves the conversation away from treating the spectrum as biologically uniform.
What I find important here is the distinction between saying “autism is more than one condition” and saying “this study has identified multiple separate types of autism.” The findings suggest that people diagnosed earlier versus later in development can have different developmental trajectories and genetic profiles, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we can already define distinct biological subtypes.
That kind of heterogeneity could explain why research findings don’t always translate equally across everyone with an ASD diagnosis. Two people may meet the same clinical criteria while having quite different underlying biology, co-occurring traits, developmental histories, and support needs.
This is also where personalised medicine becomes particularly interesting. Rather than assuming that one biological mechanism explains the entire spectrum, future research may need to identify meaningful subgroups and understand what biological pathways are actually involved in each.
At Advancells, our role is on the stem cell manufacturing and research side, not diagnosing or providing treatment for autism. From that perspective, studies like this are valuable because better biological classification could eventually help researchers design more targeted studies and evaluate potential interventions more appropriately.
The exciting part isn’t necessarily proving that autism has “many conditions.” It’s figuring out why such different biological and developmental pathways can produce overlapping clinical characteristics.
